Bandage care

Good bandage care is important in the healing of an injury.

Overview

Bandages are applied for a number of reasons:

• Protection
• Support
• Compression
• Immobilisation
• Strapping

Bandages are carefully applied to serve the purpose in which is it intended for. They are applied firmly but not too tightly so that the circulation is impaired.

Bandage care

Bandages are generally changed every 1-5 days so it is important to adhere to the instructions your veterinarian gives you.

It is important to check daily:

• The bandage or cast has not slipped
• There is no swelling above or below the bandage or cast
• There is no odour
• That your pet does not seem distressed by the bandage

When going outside

A bandage or cast must be kept dry and clean at all times. Moisture can lead to skin irritation and infection. To avoid dampness, place a temporary plastic bag over the bandage until out of the rain. Never leave a plastic bag for longer than 30 minutes at a time.

When to call your veterinarian

It is important that you monitor your pet and bandage regularly.

If you notice any of these signs, seek veterinary attention:

• Bandage comes off (do not attempt to reapply yourself)
• Bandage has slipped or is "bunched"
• Bandage is wet
• Bleeding is seen through the bandage
• Limb swelling above the bandage
• Sores at the top of the bandage
• Pet is irritated by bandage
• Bandage is smelly
