Plant poisons

Surprisingly there are a number of common household plants that are toxic to our pets.

Overview

Poisoning can occur when a toxic plant product is ingested, inhaled, or absorbed.

Signs

General signs of poisoning:

  • Salivating
  • Twitching or tremors
  • Agitation
  • Panting
  • Seizures
  • Vomiting
  • Skin burns
  • Weakness
  • Loss of balance

Causes

There are many plant products that are poisonous to our pets. If your pet gains access to the following list of plant products, seek veterinary attention immediately.

Common plant poisons:

  • Algae
  • Bird of paradise
  • Chrysanthemums
  • Daffodil
  • Daisy
  • Eucalyptus
  • Ferns
  • Iris
  • Ivy
  • Lilly
  • Mushrooms
  • Nettles
  • Peach
  • Rhododendrons

Tips

If your pet shows signs of poisoning such as increased salivation, tremors, difficulty breathing, collapse, seek veterinary attention.
